Let me tell you about my trip to the library yesterday. And let me tell you in list form because that's all I seem to be capable of.
a. The library on Monday night at 7:30 pm is very busy. Why is that? I feel as though I have been at the library at this time on other nights of the week and haven't been overrun by patrons. There was definitely something happening in the multipurpose room, but aside from that I didn't see any programming. There were just kids everywhere. All three times I had to use the catalog computer (because I COULD NOT remember thedewey codes) I had to wait in line. And that was for the Catalog Only computers! I can't imagine what the wait was for the 30 Minute Internet computers. Also, Library, how come there was no signs saying the goingons of the multipurpose room on Monday night? Perhaps I wanted to participate last minute, hmmmm?
b. Really, Library, an American Idol book display is necessary? Because I need to disagree. Since there are no ACTUAL book about the show in your building, I don't think to need to pull together every book about music, about every artist who has sung every song in every audition, and about every wannabe starlet making in the big city, and then put up a big sign that says, "Like American Idol? Check out these titles!" If people like American Idol then they need to get a grip on reality and read something else. Really.
c. I have never received the pleasure of spending money without actually spending it until now. Practically every other day I go the library and they let me walk right out with AS MANY BOOKS AS I WANT. Really. Yesterday, I decided I wanted to get some books on writing since I was tired of the million I already own from college. I searched "writing" in the Catalog Only computer, it gave me a book with the dewey numeral 808.2 and I beelined for that section--nestled way back under the second-floor balcony in a series of shelves that would make claustrophobes panic--and pulled out everything with an interesting title in a four-foot radius. Then they let me have them! All! Magic!
d. Library, I love you. Never change. (Except for that parking problem on Monday nights. And the unidentified use of the multipurpose room. And the AI display.)
Comments
I still always get confused and assume that AI refers to artificial intelligence. *sigh* I scored crazy low on Heather Anne's test, but I bet she wouldn't believe how culturally clueless I really am.
I bet we probably scored the same. I hate AI so much that I only got points for living so close to the anti-christ. (I scored somewhere around 100.)
Oh, AND I was in the library the other night when you called. It was too late for me to go out after--I'm an early-to-bedder!

I don't know if every library is like this, but at the one I worked at, there was a 99 book limit.
Good to know. I'm proud to say that I haven't returned a book late yet, so as long as I keep up that track record I probably won't ever break the book limit. But it's only been like a month so we'll see.

so, i work at a library. child patrons are loud, irritating, and always have snot on their faces (gag).
parking is always an issue--like everyone in the same town has the desire for books at the SAME TIME.
multipurpose room schedules are almost impossible to keep posted--b/c they're in high demand, especially if they have televisions in them--like people don't own their own tv's?
and AI--is indeed the devil.
(i am posting this from a library and a kid with snot on his face just walked by--not a lie).
But at least you get free books, right? I mean...uh.

So you know, your grandmother was the one who got the amazing, state of the art library built in the town I grew up in. Yup. She did a lot of remarkable things. And, I didn't even know at the time that she did it. We just learned to appreciate libraries.
I love gettin lost in the "stacks".
My library isn't very state of the art. Getting lost in the stacks is kind of scary, actually.

yes...i left out the best part, thank you for reminding me--all the irritation is worth it because you get FREE BOOKS!
Well, free books AND all the cute boys. (I'm writing them into existence.)

My library is conveniently located at the other end of the parking lot from the courthouse!, AND, they have a drive-through, no waiting book return mailbox, too! PLUS: they will send me a requested book in its own canvasy-bag in the regular USMail, with a POSTAGE-PAID return shipping label-guy to slip into the special postage-slot on the canvasy-bag when I'm done!!!! I LOVE MY LIBRARY SO, SO MUCH!!!!
