Everything you want. It's a great idea!
We had to ask the server (who was hardly competent with normal tasks) to change the channel on the TV behind us. It was playing football and we could only catch the World Series when the door to the patio opened.
He seemed to understand when we asked for the channel change, his empathy grating me: move faster if you care so much, don't make us ask for something so obvious.
I, personally, didn't want the channel change. Seeing Game 2 wasn't going to further my life and I might end up crying by Game 7. But T insisted on keeping up with this life-changing series.
Every World Series is life-changing and I always find myself getting emotionally attached. Interviews with the players fuel my own internet research and suddenly I learn the intimate details of the lives of the players and the communities they come from.
And when one team HAS to lose, I lose.
"Who are you rooting for?" T asked, ignoring my request to ignore baseball.
"Detroit," I answer, matter-of-factly, while ignoring my own tendency to hurt myself.
He was surprised; not at my answer but my readiness to supply one with so much animosity towards baseball.
"Well, how could you not? The city has been depressed for years."
T looked at me, confused, but not sure how to ask what exactly I meant by that.
"The economy," I provided as a follow-up. Following another awkward silence, I finally asked, "Okay, so who won the first game?"
"St. Louis."

i haven't watched a world series since the players went on strike in '94, led by braves superstar pitcher tom glavine. some people might call that a grudge.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't even know who was playing in the World Series. I have no idea why that would possibly make you feel any better, but there it is.

Oooh, I KNEW who was playing because Herb told me! ;)
Also, I have friends in Detroit. And since there isn't much logic to my World Series rooting, and so many of the players are from Venezuala, I'd rather drink my wine and listen to others tell of their team loyalties.

Kat, that's another great reason to cheer for a team: because someone good you know really cares.
Heather Anne, I'm pretty sure I was barely alive in 1994. Maybe you should let that one go. Detroit needs you!
Jennie, now that you know you're cheering for Detroit, right?
Sally, bring some wine and I'll watch the series with you. Go Detroit!

Sufjan! Tigers! The only thing missing from this post is a Harry Potter reference. After game three, I'm now pretty convinced that the Tigers will lose. For more of my pessimism, go here: http://bourgeoisburglars.blogspot.com
